Resilience is a career advantage  5 strategies for your career toolbox

Resilience is a career advantage 5 strategies for your career toolboxResilience is a career advantage 5 strategies for your career toolboxVolatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous - for many, this describes their work environment perfectly. This environment requires us to be resilient - to take charge of our careers and lives and ride the waves of change instead of letting them drown us. Being resilient boosts our ability to manage career obstacles, make sense of organizational changes, and manage transition, while continuing to be productive and satisfied in our careers.Over my twenty years as a career and leadership coach, I have often heard clients describe their busy careers as out of control and impossible to manage. Some are workaholics who have become tired of feeling like they are putting their personal lives - family, hobbies, exercise - on the back burner. Some are successes in their field who equate being able to keep going with being resilient. But being resilient does bedrngnis mean you put your head down and power through. Being resilient means you have the skills to handle change and to recover and recharge yourself so you have the energy needed for a productive, engaging career and life. The flip side of resilience is burnout. The American Psychological Associations David Ballard, PsyD, describes job burnout as an extended period of time where someone experiences exhaustion and a lack of interest in things, resulting in a decline in their job performance. 1 The symptoms are different for everyone, but there are clear warning signs. Do you feel exhausted many days? Do you lack motivation? Is your internal drive not as strong as it used to be? Do you feel constantly frustrated? Are you having difficulty focusing on your work? Burnout can be caused by a number of factors, including a high-pressure work environment, unclear job expectations, too many responsibilities, lifestyle choices and certain personality traits. Being connected 24/7 is also a factor in burnout, and a connection has been found between not receiving recognition for good work and burnout. My focus on resilience has its roots in one of my own career transitions. When the Fortune 500 company for whom I provided coaching services was acquired by another company, I was told my services were no longer needed. In order to provide a proper transition for the employees I was already coaching, I was granted an additional three months and worked with many employees whose jobs had been eliminated and with others who decided to explore new career paths. As I made the journey with them, I saw that some were thrown off by this major change and began to second-guess their competence even though they had had very successful careers. By comparison, individuals with career resilience were able to navigate much more effectively through the process. I identified five common strategies that these resilient people possessed as part of their career toolbox. These became my Benatti Resiliency Model. The Benatti Resiliency Model consists of five strategiesWell-being physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Self-care to enhance your health and well-being yields immediate benefits. You will be more productive and energized.Self-awareness purpose, mindset, and type. Your purpose defines the direction in which you would like to see your career and life move. Having the mindset that you have control over your personal and professional achievements helps you move forward. Knowing the natural gifts and challenges of your personality type is key to functioning well in the workplace.Brand attributes, impact, and reputation. Brand doesnt just differentiate you in the marketplace knowing your brand lets you be more visible and proactive in your career.Connection cultivating relationships. Strong relationships are the strongest predictor of life and career satisfaction. 2Innovation challenging yourself. Introducing new challenges, interests, or competencies into your care er and life keeps you recharged and resilient. In every session, my leadership coaching focuses on developing resiliency strategies. Clients often say, I dont need resiliency strategies. I have it all under control. Yet when I interview their colleagues and direct reports as part of the coaching process, I hear another story. Their coworkers describe them as addicted to urgency and often out of focus - not the image they think theyre projecting at all While stress has several positive motivational benefits, in unhealthy amounts it can interfere with your career and personal life in many ways.I treat resilience as a business competency, and all my clients work through the Benatti Resiliency Model. We know how important time management, project management, and leadership are, but how can we be effective in our careers if we do not have the ability to bounce back and deal with change? If you do not focus on your resilience as a key career competency, you will at some point become bored , burned out, or exhausted. You will not have the energy to propel your career in the direction you want, or worse, you may find yourself downsized with nowhere to turn. When you focus on your resilience, you will have more positive energy to deal with challenges and a more balanced life.Beth Benatti Kennedy, MS LMFT brings more than twenty years of experience to her role as a leadership and executive coach, resiliency-training expert, and speaker. With an extensive background in career development, she coaches high-potential individuals on how to use their influence strategically, collaborate effectively, and focus on innovation. Her new book, Career Recharge Five Strategies to boost Resilience and Beat Burnout, was published in October.FootnotesLisa M. These are the states where the most psychopaths work

These are the states where the most psychopaths workThese are the states where the most psychopaths workWe know there are certain professions that draw more psychopaths than others (and one of the top ones may rhyme with schmoyers) but are there certain states that also tend to house more of these types? Well according to anew studyrecently published onthe Social Science Research Network, psychopaths do tend to end up in certain states and one place in particular. The study compiled the rankings by looking at five distinct personality traits in each state plus the District of Columbia extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness and then calculating the frequency of a combination of those traits that psychopaths tend to have for each state. Psychopathy is defined as a combination of disinhibition, boldness, and meanness.Crooked and psychoticSo where do disinhibited, bold and mean people tend to reside? It is, not surprisingly, Washington D.C. for the win. From the study The District of Columbia is measured to be far more psychopathic than any individual state in the country, a fact that can be readily explained either by its very high population density or by the type of person who may be drawn a literal seat of power. And by type of person, this clearly refers to politicians. Though to be fair, D.C. also has the most journalists per capita. But journalists are never power hungry, right?Connecticut came in officially as the No.1 state for psychopaths (but still less than D.C.) followed by California and New Jersey.Ryan Murphy, the author of the study, found that, not surprisingly, the Northeast seemed to house the most Patrick Bateman-types and that psychopaths stayed away from the more rural areas which is why West Virginia came in last followed by Vermont and Tennessee. Though oddly, the very rural Wyoming came in at fifth place.Murphy emphasized that therankings should be looked at as estimate as it is difficult to use broad person ality traits to make specific diagnoses. The places in America with the most psychopaths1. Video interviewing allows organizations to engage with candidates easily. Many hiring managers are now slowly adopting this approach for a number of great reasons.Below are some of the important reasons to implement video interviewing in the current hiring environment.Enhance the candidates experienceTop talent loves the idea of working for cutting-edge organizations that embrace new technology. Keeping this in mind, recruiters using videos in the interviewing process create a positive impression compared to those who rely only on conventional techniques. Additionally, hosting a webinar before starting the interview process is a great idea It is great to give candidates a look into your organization and help you find candidates interested in your organization.Even though phone interviews seem helpful, video recruitment encourages confidence among your candidates and boosts transparency. Allowing your candidates to answer questions from the comfort of their homes and provides them with the time and space required to present themselves naturally in a familiar environment. While we are on the topic of enhancing the candidate experience, heres an additional tip to improve it. Personalized emails are an excellent idea. Checkout these Mailchimp alternatives to easily create attractive emails and much moreEase the burden of schedulingSay youre screening 50 candidates for one-on-one interviews. Scheduling those interviews can pose a massive challenge. When youre hiring even more candidates, the problem only gets worse. However, with video interviews, you can ask the candidates to complete them whenever they find a convenient time. The hiring manager and their team can analyze candidate responses as and when their own time permits.Create a positive interview experienceOne-way video interviews can help you attract passive candidates, which they would have otherwise ignored due to time constraints. Candidates can quickly shell out 15 to 20 minutes of their time to record their answers at any given moment. By adopting this practice, you can attract the best talent with bare tiefpunkt efforts.Cutting your hire timeThe key to keeping your candidates interested in the hiring process is to sustain momentum. You can keep up this momentum by reducing your time to hire so candidates dont lose interest in your role. Also, leveraging live chat software to quickly pre-interview candidates is a good practice. It helps you ask more relevant questions during the interview. If you choose to go with a pre-recorded video interview, it becomes effortless to determine candidates suitability only a few minutes after they apply. You can skip on to the next candidate if the formers answers dont convinc e you.Improve your hire qualityThe most beneficial feature of embracing this technology is you can review interviews multiple times. Once a candidate completes their interview, you can ask your hiring managers to make a comparison between the best candidates. If youre unsure of certain aspects, get input from your superiors and colleagues.Candidates may look brighter on paper but disappoint you following a video interview. Instead of scrutinizing each CV which eats away your time, you can get a clearer picture of whether they are fit for the role via their video responses. Additionally, video interviews offer you an opportunity to interact better with the candidates and help you uncover diamond-in-the-rough candidatesPresent your companys valuesWhen you opt for a pre-recorded video message, video questions, or a live video interview, the technology allows you to showcase the values of your company intimately. It also offers candidates a feeling of engagement with your company at thi s early stage. Once you give them an idea of your culture, their enthusiasm and answers can show you why they are a good fit for the role or not.Expanding your talent poolIf you want to source the most exceptional candidates, limiting your reach to only the local talent pool will cripple your chances of securing the best talent. Video interviews allow your organization to choose from a diverse range of candidates located all across the globe. You can easily connect with the best talent you may never find otherwise.Video Interviewing Best PracticesOnce you decide to include video interviews in your recruitment process, here are some essential pointers to considerCreate a consistent interview processWith minimal exceptions, like accommodating a great candidate, try creating the same hiring process for everyone in a given role. This may include using a video interview at the same point during the recruitment process. You should also pose the same questions to all the candidates during the interview. By practicing this, youll be evaluating them on an even playing field.Embrace appropriate technologyYou might like the idea of using Skype while interviewing. However, once youve become regular with your video interviews, try using video interviewing software instead, as it comes with multiple benefits. Most software integrates with your existing workflows and technology, resulting in a seamless process for both you and your candidates. When trying to find the ideal software, consider what you want your technology to accomplish besides the features youd love to see. You can get all the details during a live demo and ensure that the technology assists you to optimize the interviewing process.Check your setupEnsure your live video interviews go easily by completing a live interview concierge appointment with your video interviewing platform. This may include using an external microphone and headphones to avoid unwanted echoes or sounds from speakers. Be sure also to focu s on your clarity and vocal volume.Train your eyesWhen it comes to eye contact, it can feel tempting to gape at your image on the screen or the candidate. Its fine to do that to some extent. However, learn to train your eyes on the camera. Remember that while conducting an interview, the candidate is also interviewing you. So dont send out any negative vibes or make the candidate feel uncomfortable while staring at them. If you create an awkward environment, you may sometimes miss out on an ideal candidate.Choose a professional settingThe place where you conduct the interview highlights your companys values, work ethic, and culture. You may choose an indoor or outdoor location, but ensure that it represents your organization in the best possible way. Be sure to put yourself in a professional environment and do your best to limit background distractions. Choose a serene place.Use both pre-recorded and live videosEverything has its own time and place. In a pre-recorded video, you give candidates a set of questions. The interview then has to be completed in a stipulated time frame. You can use this technique in situations where youve got a lot of qualified candidates and want help in saving time during the screening process. On the other hand, live video interviews are appropriate for roles that are heavily competitive. In such instances, you may want a personal touch to pick the choicest candidates.Prepare correctlySend yourself an invitation to interview and complete the process yourself. That ensures that you are not making your candidates go through a complicated procedure. If you choose to do live interviews, test your equipment ahead of the scheduled time. If you plan to run a pre-recorded interview, record an enticing introduction to let your candidates know about you and your organization.Prepare a list of questions to remain organized so that you dont miss out on any critical points. And dont ask questions randomly as this will indicate you arent listeni ng to candidates answers. It also restricts you from digging deeper into the candidate. Be a good listener before you respond or ask another question.End the interview the right wayOnce youve finished interviewing, tell your candidates about the next essential steps and give them a tentative date when they can expect to hear from you.Summing UpWhat works for one company may not work for another. You have to evaluate your video interviewing process to ensure everything works out well. Learning to conduct video interviews may be high on hiring managers lists because many people like to work remotely. Its time to up your ante and learn the intricacies of conducting video interviews.Author BioUrmi is a content writer at SocialPilot. 3D Printing Compete or CoExist

3D Printing Compete or CoExist 3D Printing Compete or CoExist 3D Printing Compete or Co-Exist?Having proven its value for rapid prototyping, 3D printing is, for sure, having a major impact on the entwurf of products and consequently on the overall manufacturing process. But there is still debate about how far 3D printing will be extended. Will it replace much traditional manufacturing processes or exist alongside it?Vicki Holt, CEO of Proto Labs, which pioneered rapid manufacturing of custom parts by taking a 3D printing-like digital approach to the front end of the traditional, or subtractive, manufacturing processes of injection molding and computergesttzte numerische steuerung machining, believes 3D printing is opening opportunities for design flexibility but that its going to co-exist with traditional manufacturing processes. She says each process has its own benefits and its own drawbacks and a decision about which to choose depends on a number of factors.A Selective Laser Sinter ing part the part is shown on top of the powder from which it is made.3D printing brings another set of tools to the toolkit for design engineers, Holt says. It can make new product introductions faster and less expensive during the design phase. If Proto Labs business is any indication, design engineers are taking advantage of it. Holt says growth of her companys 3D printing business, which it acquired in April of last year with the purchase of FineLine Prototyping, Inc., grew by 79 percent in the first quarter of this year over first quarter last year (prior to the acquisition). As for being used for final versions of products or components, that is still in very early stages. A survey last year by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and ZPryme asked more than 100 industrial manufacturers how they were using 3D printing technology. Only 0.9 percent said they were using 3D printing for producing final products or components, but 24.6 percent said they were using 3D printing for prototypin g only, 28.9 percent said they were experimenting with how 3D printing may apply to their business, and 33.3 percent said they were not implementing 3D printing at that time.Proto Labs estimates that 90 percent of its 3D printing business is for prototyping compared to 75 percent for CNC machining and about 50 percent for injection molding. Holt says those are really estimates because they dont always know how the items they produce are going to be used.An image of a DMLS part showing the intricacy that can be achieved. 3D printing today is slow and expensive if you are going to produce a lot of a part, Holt says. Its much more cost effective to machine or injection mold. And also you are limited on the materials that have been developed for a 3D printer. Those are the things that need to be improved. There is a lot of work being done in those areas. I am confident there are going to be next generation machines that are beginning to assess that. She says much depends on a customers n eeds. Generally, ProtoLabs customers order a 3D-printed part when the maximum number is 50 or maybe 100 if its a small part. She identified the medical device market, aerospace, industrial machining and robotics as industries that are leading the way in using 3D printing.Part of the reason I think these industries tend to buy from us is that they do a lot of prototyping innovation and development and they need samples to go and develop their products, she says. If you are manufacturing one spacecraft, for example, you only need to print it once. You dont need millions, and for that you can develop a novel design that you couldnt do with a traditional manufacturing process and also collapse a number of parts into one. It might even be more efficient that way.PwC reported in an issue of its Technology Forecast magazine on emerging uses of 3D printing in several industry sectors including automotive and industrial manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, retail, and sports. Uses range fro m consolidation of several parts into a single, more complex part to customized medical products and safer protective gear.In fact, Ford, General Electric, and Medtronics are companies at the forefront Ford for auto parts, GE for jet engine parts, and Medtronics for prototyping medical devices. Holt says she is also starting to see some design engineers take a look at a whole assembly of parts and question whether there is a way to consolidate the parts, print the whole thing, and skip the assembly. This could bring about both cost savings and faster production, she says. That alone could be a gamechanger.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer.Learn more about the issues and challenges associated with every step of the additive manufacturing lifecycle atAM3D Conference ExpoEach manufacturing process has its own benefits and its own drawbacks, and a decision about which to choose depends on a number of factors.Vicki Holt, CEO, Proto Labs

Glassdoor Study Finds LGBTQ Harassment Pervasive in Workplace

Glassdoor Study Finds LGBTQ Harassment Pervasive in Workplace Glassdoor Study Finds LGBTQ Harassment Pervasive in Workplace There’s no doubt that public sentiment towards LGBTQ individuals has largely improved over the past couple of decades. In just fifteen years, American support of same-sex marriage grew by 30 percentage points to 61 percent approval, according to the Pew Research Center . Meanwhile, transgender celebrities like Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner have ushered in a new era of visibility for trans-Americans. And most recently, the Equality Act - which would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity when it comes to employment, housing and more - passed in the House of Representatives.   But despite this progress, new data from Glassdoor shows that LGBTQ individuals still face significant discrimination in the workplace. In a Glassdoor survey conducted by The Harris Poll, more than half (53 percent) of LGBTQ employees reported that they have experienced or witnessed anti-LGBTQ comments by co-workers. Perhaps as a result of this prejudice, 43 percent of LGBTQ employees say they feel they are not fully “out” at work, with 47 percent of LGBTQ respondents saying that they believed being out at work could hurt their career, such as causing them to lose a job, get passed over for a promotion, or miss out on a key project. It’s no surprise, then, that LGBTQ employees prioritize supportive work environments when considering new jobs - 70 percent of LGBTQ respondents said they would not apply to work at a company that does not support its LGBTQ employees. Still, 68 percent of LGBTQ employees say that their current companies could be doing more to support them and their allies at work. “Still today, 26 states do not protect LGBTQ employees at work and many of these employees believe coming out could hurt their career. This is a wake-up call to employers and lawmakers,” said Jesus Suarez, Glassdoor’s LGBTQ and Ally Employee Group Leader. “Many employers have an opportunity to build or strengthen the foundation for an inclusive culture that encourages employees to bring their full selves to work.” If you encounter discrimination based on your gender identity or sexual orientation at work, you don’t have to put up with it. To begin with, document all instances of harassment or discrimination that you encounter in detail, says Stan Kimer, president of Total Engagement Consulting and former global corporate LGBTQ diversity manager for IBM. If you are confident that your company is LGBTQ-friendly, you may consider bringing it up to HR. A few signs that your company might be receptive to conversations around LGBTQ issues include the following: However, if you don’t feel comfortable approaching your HR department, or if you do approach them and they mishandle the issue, consider reaching out to one of the following organizations: For more tips, consult Glassdoor’s Workplace Guide for LGBTQ Professionals . Remember - everyone deserves to be comfortable at work, so if you feel as if you can’t be your authentic self, don’t be afraid to take action, whether that means approaching HR, confiding in a trusted colleague or even finding a new job at a more welcoming organization.       “We’re seeing a strong majority of LGBTQ employees wanting more support from their employers, and there are many ways to offer support that go beyond benefits and policies,” said Suarez. So how can you create a more welcoming work environment for LGBTQ employees? Consider the following steps: Creating a sense of welcoming and belonging for LGBTQ employees isn’t just the right thing to do - it’s also a business imperative. “Any employer that chooses to ignore implementing supportive working environments and policies risk missing out on hiring quality talent,” said Suarez. Survey Methodology: This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Glassdoor from April 26 â€" May 6, 2019 among 6,104 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, among whom 515 are employed and identify as LGBTQ. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. Strategies to Kickstart Your Job Search in 2016

Strategies to Kickstart Your Job Search in 2016 Strategies to Kickstart Your Job Search in 2016 The new year is the perfect time to jump-start your job search. A new year means it’s time to try out some new strategies for kickstarting your job search. Whether you already have a job but are unhappy in your position, you’ve been unemployed and are searching for a way to pay the bills, or you are fresh out of school and are ready to begin your professional career, these tips can help you to get your foot in the door and start out the new year with interviews and job offers.Network, network, network. The best advice to remember during your job search is that human beings hire human beings. You may already have a stellar resume and outstanding references- but having that human connection can put you one step further than the rest of the crowd. Create and take advantage of opportunities to meet as many people as possible, both within your career field and outside of it. The best way to start this, if you are new to networking, is to attend industry conferences, join professional a ssociations, etc. Then it’s time to start striking up conversations with anyone who will listen. Hopefully, over time, you will build up a least a few helpful contacts within the industry that will be able to give you an edge on your applications.Start getting strategic. When you’re looking for a job, the simple search for an open position alone can get overwhelming. The best way to tackle this is to set up a step-by-step plan that you can take one day at a time. Create a plan of action to land a position. This plan should consist of your main goals, which will be landing a position. You should set up ways to search within your own field or industry, so you’re time on job boards is targeted and well spent. As mentioned before, utilize you network. You may have to call in some favors and pull strings, but that is what networking is for.Get your resume back up to speed.Even if you’ve recently updated your resume, this is something you should be doing constantly. Employers don†™t want to see that you’ve been slacking during the job search. If you are currently unemployed, set up volunteering opportunities that you can talk about during an interview. If you are employed but looking for a new position, work hard on that current project so that your efforts and contributions can be noticed. If you are in a creative field, keep your portfolio up-to-date with new examples added even during unemployment.Work on your social media. When you think about looking for a job, social media might not instantly come to mind. However, it can actually play a large role in you landing a job. Update all of your social media accounts- add relevant information, make sure they are work-friendly, add recent achievements. Interviewers do look at these accounts. One social media account you should particularly pay attention to is LinkedIn. This is often the first place hiring managers look. Always keep an updated resume and portfolio online. If you have new contributions from you r current position, make sure they are available to see.Take a break. This may seem counter-intuitive, but it is really true that you can wear yourself out from the job search. If this happens, you are not working at full-capacity when it comes to finding a job. If you can afford to, take a much needed week off from the search. Sometimes, it takes a small break for you to be able to see clearly with fresh eyes. You will also be amazed at your increase in mood and outlook towards the job search.

What to Never Say When Networking

What to Never Say When Networking What to Never Say When Networking Networking used to be organic. You went to a gathering of like-minded people in your community, or to lunch with individuals the host thought might like to get to know each other. Now it’s a job. Get to the right event. Meet the right people. Make that contact and follow up. And while there are plenty of stories of the ways people have wowed an executive with a memorable opening line or a particularly creative approach, there are far more networking fails than networking unicorns. There’s a fine line between innovative and inappropriate. Here’s what not to say when networking. 1. “I didn’t think there would be people here that I would actually   want to talk to.” The primary rule of thumb is “Be prepared. Be aware. Be wary.” Know why you’re going and the general purpose of the meet-up. Be alert to the people and the surroundings. Is everyone there in a suit and tie, talking about crunching numbers? Be wary of saying something that might be misconstrued, or is just idiotic. Listen first. Ask questions first. Don’t spout off, before you know who you’re talking to. 2. “Are there any job openings at your company because my boss is the absolute worst.” Never, ever trash your boss - present or past. I don’t care if your employers have been Frank Underwood and Miranda Priestly . Just don’t go there, even if you’re asked. This is the time to play it safe. Lots of smiling and evading are called for. Often times you don’t know who’s asking you or why. And for goodness sake, don’t bring it up yourself. 3. “My friends Zuck and Sheryl are meeting me for dinner after this…” Be careful about name dropping. Again, you may not know the other person’s opinions or experiences with the name you’re dropping. And this goes for name dropping well-known figures or just acquaintances. If unbeknownst to you, it’s her ex-brother-in-law who got her into Exxon stock, she may not be too happy to hear about your close relationship. 4. “That reminds me of this one time when I was at Oxford…” Some over-eager job seekers wedge their college or grad school into all conversations, especially if it’s a big logo institution. Be careful. People may be impressed. Or, they may be irritated, laugh at your expense or assume you’re the pretentious person you appear to be. Modesty is a good policy when you are networking, at least until you get a sense of your room. 5. “When I think about immigration, taxes, and healthcare, I just think…” Politics and religions. EEEEH. You may want to steer clear of both of these until you get the lay of the land. Dumping on Obama at a Dem heavy event is obviously not too smart, but then neither is trashing Trump when you have no idea of someone’s background or POV. 6. “Can you believe that new show on Scientology? That is so…” Religion is the same situation. Don’t start conversations by making fun of an individual or a group’s belief system. Humor at networking events can be filled with landmines. You just never know. 7. “If you ask any of my managers, they’ll tell you I’m a truly disruptive innovator and…” Don’t use outdated, over-used and badly applied clichés. These are sure to get eye rolls: Think out of the box. Disruptor. Game-changer. Break down silos. I have the bandwidth. Push the envelope. While speaking directly is important in business, being this direct is downright presumptuous and rude. When networking, it’s risky to ask for a job from a new acquaintance. It’s just as  risky to request a reference, especially if you’ve just met the person. Networking should yield a mutually beneficial relationship, not an Aladdin and the genie arrangement. Your wish is not their command.

4 Reasons to Turn Down a Job Offer

4 Reasons to Turn Down a Job Offer 4 Reasons to Turn Down a Job Offer Whether you’re new to the workforce or have been plugging away for years, it’s always exciting when a   job offer  lands in your lap. But before you rush to sign on the dotted line, it pays to consider the drawbacks of saying yes. Here are a few reasons why you might decide to turn down a job offer - even if you previously thought you wanted it. Not every position offers a direct path to the top of the corporate chain. But if you have reason to suspect that your offer will land you in a   dead-end role , you’d be wise to run the other way. Before you accept an offer, consider the career path the associated job will take you on. Will you learn new skills that help you reach management status? Or will you simply spend your days doing busy work that ultimately doesn’t do a thing for your resume? If you’re dealing with the latter, then consider it a red flag. Another way to tell? Study the professional profiles of folks who have already done the job you’re thinking of doing, and see what their career paths looked like. Did they excel in the years following that role, or did they simply bounce around laterally? Again, you don’t want the latter, or at least not on a long-term basis, so do some digging before signing up for a position that will ultimately make you unhappy . Though money isn’t everything when it comes to a job, you   should  take steps to ensure that you’re being paid fairly. So if you   do your research  and find out that the salary you’re being offered is exceptionally low, you may want to run the other way. Does it pay to negotiate a better number first? In some cases, yes, especially if it’s your dream job and the peripheral benefits, like paid time off and health insurance , are great. But if the number is completely off the charts, and not in your favor, then take it as a sign that you and your would-be employer just aren’t on the same page. Though the day-to-day specifics of your job will play a role in dictating your ultimate happiness with it, don’t discount the importance of finding the right company culture . This means that if you’re the laid-back type who prefers to work creatively, you might quickly grow discontent in a buttoned-up, policy-ridden corporate environment. So talk to people who work or have worked for the company that’s offering you a position to see if the environment you’re about to enter will mesh with your personality. And if you find that that’s unlikely to be the case, say no. Maybe you’re being offered a job with tons of mobility, a competitive salary and a company culture that’s just what you’re looking for. That’s all fine and good, but if the company in question has been performing poorly in recent years, and its prospects don’t look positive, then you’re better off declining that offer than signing up to board a sinking ship. Some red flags to look out for when gauging a prospective employer’s viability are dire financials and a history of downsizing. Both point to major problems with the company’s management, which can spell disaster on a long-term basis. It’s always flattering to receive a job offer, but don’t let the fact that a company wants you go to your head. Instead, take your time when considering that offer, and turn it down if any of the above scenarios apply and can’t be resolved. You may be better off sticking out your current job or extending your search and waiting until the right opportunity truly presents itself. This article was originally published on The Motley Fool . 5 Job-search Steps to Shorten the Hunt

5 Job-search Steps to Shorten the Hunt 5 Job-search Steps to Shorten the Hunt 5 Job-search Steps to Shorten the Hunt Speed up your job search. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who actually enjoys looking and applying for jobs. The process isn't necessarily enjoyable, but at the very least, you can make it as short as possible. Whether you've just started your job search or you've passively been on the hunt for some time now, here are the five most crucial job-search tips to help you take control of the process and make the best use of your time. 1. Define what you're looking for in your next role Spend a few hours combing through online listings and you're guaranteed to find lots of jobs that you could feasibly do. But between tweaking your resume, finding a hiring manager's email address, writing a cover letter, and sending follow-ups, you could easily spend hours on just one role even one that might not necessarily be a great fit. You wouldn't spend time at work investing in a project with little-to-no ROI, so instead, reinvest a few hours of your time asking yourself a few important questions: What's the title I want next? What types of projects do I want to tackle? What are my non-negotiables? Just remember: You won't find the right job for you if you don't know what you really want, and you could waste a lot of time in the process if you don't figure it out stat. 2. Write your elevator pitch Once you know what you want, it's time to tailor your elevator pitch to emphasize what exactly about your background makes you the right candidate. This should be a few short, digestible sentences preferably no more than three (take into consideration the amount of time you'd actually spend on an elevator ride). Use them to highlight your most relevant accomplishments so clearly that even a complete stranger could understand. With your well-rehearsed elevator pitch on hand, you'll be well-prepared for both networking events and the first question any recruiter or hiring manager is going to have for you: Tell me about yourself! Related:5 Tips for Delivering the Perfect Elevator Pitch 3. Purchase a professional resume rewrite Before you even consider applying to a single job, you'll need to be armed with an updated resume that accurately and effectively reflects your experience. Of all the job-search tips here, this is the only one that can be easily outsourced to experienced professionals and will make sure you're positioned for the dream job scenario you envisioned in Step One. Aside from the fact that writing a resume on your own can come with a lot of costly and time-consuming mistakes, purchasing a professional resume rewrite will allow you to spend your time where it really matters. 4. Set achievable goals It's easy when you're unemployed to believe that every waking moment should be spent on applications, networking, and phone calls. The honest truth is that most of us aren't productive even three hours per day, and the job search is not the time to start setting world productivity records. Determine what times of day you're most productive and buckle down during those hours. Then create manageable to-do lists for your application-related tasks. Setting unrealistic goals for your job search will only disappoint you and make the process feel a lot longer than it needs to be. 5. Get your network together Studies have found that up to 85 percent of all jobs are filled via networking. No matter where you are in your career, you've established a circle of people who can be instrumental in helping you find your next job. Updating your LinkedIn profile and adding all of your current and former colleagues is an easy way to expand your reach of opportunities. And don't be afraid to think outside of the box! Former clients, neighbors, friends of friends, and local business owners you know can all hold valuable insight and resources. Find connections at companies that interest you (whether or not they are advertising for open roles) and make a plan for who to reach out to where and when. Now that you've got an idea of what you want, an elevator pitch for presenting it, and a top-tier resume to showcase your experience, you have everything you need to maximize your outreach and have productive conversations. 7 Reasons You Werent Hired

7 Reasons You Weren't Hired 7 Reasons You Weren't Hired Your resume perfectly fits the job description, you’ve been hearing positive feedback from HR, and… what?! You weren’t hired? Don’t take it personally â€" there are a whole slew of reasons outside your control (and sometimes in your control) why you may have been passed up for the job you wanted. Often, the reason you weren’t hired is only distantly correlated to your strength and fit for the position. Here are 7  reasons why you may not have gotten the job: Recruiters say that over half of job applicants for a given job aren’t qualified â€" and sometimes even more. Don’t be surprised when you don’t hear back if you only met 50 percent of the qualifications. But on the other hand, myopically applying for only the jobs you are fully qualified you for can limit your options. Applying for a job that asks for 6 years of experience when you only have 4 isn’t overly idealistic. Go for It. Sometimes HR will post jobs online even though the company is going through internal turmoil, and actually hasn’t hired anyone in a year. A hiring freeze could also take effect when you’re in the interview process, in which case you could unceremoniously be dropped out of the running. This might also be something HR doesn’t want you to know, because they don’t want news to spread about why the freeze had to happen. Internal candidates generally have first dibs on a role than a new hire coming into the company. In fact, sometimes an internal candidate was the only one being considered all along, but the company has a policy about publically posting jobs. The job could have only had the illusion of being open, but was actually reserved for someone else from the start. Again, don’t get down on yourself. Even if your resume perfectly fit the qualifications and your cover letter was stellar, there’s no guarantee you’ll land the job. It depends on where you’re interviewing, but many workplaces are increasingly concerned with building a cohesive company culture. Research company culture on Glassdoor beforehand so you have a better idea of what they’re looking for. When HR is looking at a talented pool of applicants, even one misstep can be reason  enough to cost you the gig. No matter how talented you are, it’s always important to be courteous, professional and kind to the people who are hiring you. If a hiring manager is looking for someone to do a specific job that you seem over-qualified for, they might take the less-qualified applicant for budget reasons or because the role was more junior than your qualifications. Hopefully, you will quickly be rewarded for your skills elsewhere! Hiring can be put on hold during a major restructuring, during which HR will be reevaluating their priorities for what kind of job positions they need. If you’re still really excited about the company, don’t give up hope â€" let HR know that you’re interested in any future positions that might come up. Whatever the reason, not landing a particular job shouldn’t prevent you from continuing to search. There are plenty of ways to address each of the previously mentioned reasons why you may not have landed the job. Review your resume, tap your network, get a referral and get back out there. The job search may not be easy, but scoring a job you love is well worth the wait. Editor’s Note:   The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author.   Are you an employer?
