But there is still debate about how far 3D printing will be extended. Will it replace much traditional manufacturing processes or exist alongside it?Vicki Holt, CEO of Proto Labs, which pioneered rapid manufacturing of custom parts by taking a 3D printing-like digital approach to the front end of the traditional, or subtractive, manufacturing processes of injection molding and computergesttzte numerische steuerung machining, believes 3D printing is opening opportunities for design flexibility but that its going to co-exist with traditional manufacturing processes.She says each process has its own benefits and its own drawbacks and a decision about which to choose depends on a number of factors.A Selective Laser Sinter ing part the part is shown on top of the powder from which it is made.3D printing brings another set of tools to the toolkit for design engineers, Holt says. It can make new product introductions faster and less expensive during the design phase. If Proto Labs business is any indication, design engineers are taking advantage of it. Holt says growth of her companys 3D printing business, which it acquired in April of last year with the purchase of FineLine Prototyping, Inc., grew by 79 percent in the first quarter of this year over first quarter last year (prior to the acquisition).As for being used for final versions of products or components, that is still in very early stages. A survey last year by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and ZPryme asked more than 100 industrial manufacturers how they were using 3D printing technology. Only 0.9 percent said they were using 3D printing for producing final products or components, but 24.6 percent said they were using 3D printing for prototypin g only, 28.9 percent said they were experimenting with how 3D printing may apply to their business, and 33.3 percent said they were not implementing 3D printing at that time.Proto Labs estimates that 90 percent of its 3D printing business is for prototyping compared to 75 percent for CNC machining and about 50 percent for injection molding. Its much more cost effective to machine or injection mold. And also you are limited on the materials that have been developed for a 3D printer. Those are the things that need to be improved. There is a lot of work being done in those areas. I am confident there are going to be next generation machines that are beginning to assess that.She says much depends on a customers n eeds. Generally, ProtoLabs customers order a 3D-printed part when the maximum number is 50 or maybe 100 if its a small part. She identified the medical device market, aerospace, industrial machining and robotics as industries that are leading the way in using 3D printing.Part of the reason I think these industries tend to buy from us is that they do a lot of prototyping innovation and development and they need samples to go and develop their products, she says. If you are manufacturing one spacecraft, for example, you only need to print it once. You dont need millions, and for that you can develop a novel design that you couldnt do with a traditional manufacturing process and also collapse a number of parts into one. It might even be more efficient that way.PwC reported in an issue of its Technology Forecast magazine on emerging uses of 3D printing in several industry sectors including automotive and industrial manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, retail, and sports. Uses range fro m consolidation of several parts into a single, more complex part to customized medical products and safer protective gear.In fact, Ford, General Electric, and Medtronics are companies at the forefront Ford for auto parts, GE for jet engine parts, and Medtronics for prototyping medical devices. Holt says she is also starting to see some design engineers take a look at a whole assembly of parts and question whether there is a way to consolidate the parts, print the whole thing, and skip the assembly. Glassdoor Study Finds LGBTQ Harassment Pervasive in Workplace Glassdoor Study Finds LGBTQ Harassment Pervasive in Workplace Thereâs no doubt that public sentiment towards LGBTQ individuals has largely improved over the past couple of decades. In just fifteen years, American support of same-sex marriage grew by 30 percentage points to 61 percent approval, according to the Pew Research Center . Meanwhile, transgender celebrities like Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner have ushered in a new era of visibility for trans-Americans. And most recently, the Equality Act - which would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity when it comes to employment, housing and more - passed in the House of Representatives. But despite this progress, new data from Glassdoor shows that LGBTQ individuals still face significant discrimination in the workplace. In a Glassdoor survey conducted by The Harris Poll, more than half (53 percent) of LGBTQ employees reported that they have experienced or witnessed anti-LGBTQ comments by co-workers. Perhaps as a result of this prejudice, 43 percent of LGBTQ employees say they feel they are not fully âoutâ at work, with 47 percent of LGBTQ respondents saying that they believed being out at work could hurt their career, such as causing them to lose a job, get passed over for a promotion, or miss out on a key project. Itâs no surprise, then, that LGBTQ employees prioritize supportive work environments when considering new jobs - 70 percent of LGBTQ respondents said they would not apply to work at a company that does not support its LGBTQ employees. Still, 68 percent of LGBTQ employees say that their current companies could be doing more to support them and their allies at work. âStill today, 26 states do not protect LGBTQ employees at work and many of these employees believe coming out could hurt their career. This is a wake-up call to employers and lawmakers,â said Jesus Suarez, Glassdoorâs LGBTQ and Ally Employee Group Leader. âMany employers have an opportunity to build or strengthen the foundation for an inclusive culture that encourages employees to bring their full selves to work.â If you encounter discrimination based on your gender identity or sexual orientation at work, you donât have to put up with it. To begin with, document all instances of harassment or discrimination that you encounter in detail, says Stan Kimer, president of Total Engagement Consulting and former global corporate LGBTQ diversity manager for IBM. If you are confident that your company is LGBTQ-friendly, you may consider bringing it up to HR. You went to a gathering of like-minded people in your community, or to lunch with individuals the host thought might like to get to know each other. Now itâs a job. Get to the right event. Meet the right people. Make that contact and follow up. And while there are plenty of stories of the ways people have wowed an executive with a memorable opening line or a particularly creative approach, there are far more networking fails than networking unicorns. Thereâs a fine line between innovative and inappropriate. Hereâs what not to say when networking. 1. âI didnât think there would be people here that I would actually want to talk to.â The primary rule of thumb is âBe prepared. Be aware. Be wary.â Know why youâre going and the general purpose of the meet-up. Be alert to the people and the surroundings. Is everyone there in a suit and tie, talking about crunching numbers? Be wary of saying something that might be misconstrued, or is just idiotic. Listen first. Ask questions first. Donât spout off, before you know who youâre talking to. 2. âAre there any job openings at your company because my boss is the absolute worst.â Never, ever trash your boss - present or past. I donât care if your employers have been Frank Underwood and Miranda Priestly . Just donât go there, even if youâre asked. This is the time to play it safe. Lots of smiling and evading are called for. Often times you donât know whoâs asking you or why. And for goodness sake, donât bring it up yourself. 3. âMy friends Zuck and Sheryl are meeting me for dinner after thisâ¦â Be careful about name dropping. Again, you may not know the other personâs opinions or experiences with the name youâre dropping. And this goes for name dropping well-known figures or just acquaintances. If unbeknownst to you, itâs her ex-brother-in-law who got her into Exxon stock, she may not be too happy to hear about your close relationship. 4. âThat reminds me of this one time when I was at Oxfordâ¦â Some over-eager job seekers wedge their college or grad school into all conversations, especially if itâs a big logo institution. Be careful. People may be impressed. Or, they may be irritated, laugh at your expense or assume youâre the pretentious person you appear to be. Modesty is a good policy when you are networking, at least until you get a sense of your room. 5. âWhen I think about immigration, taxes, and healthcare, I just thinkâ¦â Politics and religions. EEEEH. You may want to steer clear of both of these until you get the lay of the land. Dumping on Obama at a Dem heavy event is obviously not too smart, but then neither is trashing Trump when you have no idea of someoneâs background or POV. 6. âCan you believe that new show on Scientology? That is soâ¦â Religion is the same situation. Donât start conversations by making fun of an individual or a groupâs belief system. Humor at networking events can be filled with landmines. You just never know. 7. âIf you ask any of my managers, theyâll tell you Iâm a truly disruptive innovator andâ¦â Donât use outdated, over-used and badly applied clichés. These are sure to get eye rolls: Think out of the box. Disruptor. Game-changer. Break down silos. I have the bandwidth. Push the envelope. While speaking directly is important in business, being this direct is downright presumptuous and rude. When networking, itâs risky to ask for a job from a new acquaintance. Itâs just as risky to request a reference, especially if youâve just met the person. Networking should yield a mutually beneficial relationship, not an Aladdin and the genie arrangement. Your wish is not their command.

In some cases, yes, especially if itâs your dream job and the peripheral benefits, like paid time off and health insurance , are great. But if the number is completely off the charts, and not in your favor, then take it as a sign that you and your would-be employer just arenât on the same page. Though the day-to-day specifics of your job will play a role in dictating your ultimate happiness with it, donât discount the importance of finding the right company culture . This means that if youâre the laid-back type who prefers to work creatively, you might quickly grow discontent in a buttoned-up, policy-ridden corporate environment. So talk to people who work or have worked for the company thatâs offering you a position to see if the environment youâre about to enter will mesh with your personality. And if you find that thatâs unlikely to be the case, say no. Maybe youâre being offered a job with tons of mobility, a competitive salary and a company culture thatâs just what youâre looking for. Thatâs all fine and good, but if the company in question has been performing poorly in recent years, and its prospects donât look positive, then youâre better off declining that offer than signing up to board a sinking ship.
